Vincent Van Gogh

The highlight of Conflans was Auvers-sur-Oise, the place where Vincent Van Gogh spent his last 70 days. Vincent spent some time in a mental hospital and afterwards headed north to Auvers-sur-Oise where Dr. Gachet, a physician specializing in melancholia, resided. The town was also only 18 miles from Paris where his beloved brother and promoter, Theo lived. The train made this trip in a couple of hours.

Vincent spent much of his time in a small room in the Auberge Ravoux and took most of his meals in the tavern downstairs.

He roamed the countryside and painted 78 pictures in this short time. The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise was one of the most famous he painted at the time.

Vincent shot himself in the chest on July 27, 1890. He suffered from that gunshot wound for 2 days and died on July 29. His dear brother, Theo, died, six months later and they were buried together in Auvers-sur-Oise.

We were finally able to buy some French cheese at a farmers market in Auvers-sur-Oise and enjoyed the smelly, tangy cheese for Happy Hour.

That night was the Farewell dinner on board and the chefs outdid themselves.

One of the most amazing salmon dishes any of us had ever had!!!
