Great Sand Dunes

Zapata Falls is Colorado rough! First the 3 mile road that you drive up to the trailhead is even worse (almost) than the Point of No Return road yet there are no vehicle restrictions. The trail itself is only about 1 mile round trip but just covered enough with rocks to make it challenging. Our progress was halted several times with people loving on Sprocket! What can we say…she is a doll!

Once you get to the falls area, you need to ford the stream to get back to the falls. The water was cold but not frigid. And it only took a few minutes to realize that it is easier to just walk in the water than trying to hop from rock to rock to snow bank.

But you are justly rewarded……

The 30 foot waterfall is split in half and one side was frozen and the other was not…so very cool!

Above the falls was beautiful, too.

The view of the dunes from the trailhead was gorgeous!

The dunes in shadows…..

We celebrated Cinco de Mayo at Nino’s Mexican Restaurant in Alamosa and had a really excellent meal….maybe one of the tastiest and most generous Mexican meals we have had.

Tomorrow we head to Mesa Verde…..
