Kefalonia

What a beautiful island!! I have only seen 3 of the Greek Islands but this is by far my favorite of the three. It is green and mountainous surrounded by gorgeous blue water. We drove on the bus for about an hour to Lake Melissani. It is a crater with a collapsed roof and is anywhere from 8 to 32 feet deep. The water is crystal clear. In 1963 Austrian geologists put dye into the seawater and found that it appeared in the Lake after traveling all across the island for 14 days. If you were to taste the water, it would taste brackish due to the seawater mixing with the underground streams in the area.

When we pulled into the parking lot, we were the first ones there and walked right down the tunnel and into a waiting boat. It was definitely a cool experience but the boar ride only lasts about 15 minutes. When we came out, in those few minutes, the parking lot had completely filled with buses!!

We drove to the charming village of Sami and had a typical Mezze lunch: tzatziki, bread, green salad, a triangle pastry filled with melted feta, 2 small burgers (tho they did not taste like meat) and some calamari.

Once back to the port, I actually had some time for some shopping (which, believe it or not, has been missing) and I bought lots of good stuff. I really like Kefalonia and wouldn’t mind revisiting at some point.

Kim, I have really been enjoying your commentary and pictures along the way. Rome and now Greece, it seems there are crowds everywhere. Glad you were able to stay ahead of it on this particular tour.
    God Bless you, stay healthy!
